The CAT eligibility criteria look simple on paper — bachelor's degree with 50% marks, no age limit, anyone can apply. But the fine print hides edge cases that disqualify thousands of applicants every year: pending final-year results, integrated programs, professional degrees, reservation category percentage rules, and final-semester provisional eligibility. This is the complete checklist.
If you're applying for CAT 2026, read this before you fill the form. One wrong field and your application is rejected — no refund, no second chance.
CAT 2026 Eligibility — The Core Rules
| Criterion | General / EWS / NC-OBC | SC / ST / PwD |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum % in Bachelor's | 50% | 45% |
| Equivalent CGPA (10-point scale) | 5.0 | 4.5 |
| Age limit | None | None |
| Number of attempts | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Work experience | Not required | Not required |
Calculation method: The percentage of marks is calculated based on the practice followed by the university/institution. CGPA-to-percentage conversion follows your institution's official formula — IIMs accept the conversion certificate issued by your university.
Educational Qualification — Who Qualifies
- Bachelor's degree (3-year minimum) from a recognized university with at least 50% marks (45% for SC/ST/PwD).
- Final-year students are eligible to appear for CAT, but admission is provisional and contingent on completing the degree before the IIM session begins (typically June 2027 for CAT 2026 takers).
- Integrated programs (BBA-MBA, BTech-MTech, etc.) are eligible — apply with the bachelor's component result.
- Professional degrees (CA, CS, CMA, ICWA) are recognized as bachelor's-equivalent. CA Inter is NOT.
- Foreign degrees are eligible if recognized by AIU (Association of Indian Universities). Verify via aiu.ac.in.
- Distance education / open university degrees are eligible only if recognized by UGC and the university is in the UGC list.
Reservation & Category Eligibility
IIMs follow Government of India reservation norms:
| Category | Reservation % | Min Bachelor's % |
|---|---|---|
| General | — | 50% |
| EWS (Economically Weaker Section) | 10% | 50% |
| NC-OBC (Non-Creamy OBC) | 27% | 50% |
| SC (Scheduled Caste) | 15% | 45% |
| ST (Scheduled Tribe) | 7.5% | 45% |
| PwD (Persons with Disability) | 5% | 45% |
Documents required for category claim:
- NC-OBC: Caste certificate issued on or after 1 April 2026 (for CAT 2026 applications) — must explicitly state "non-creamy layer"
- EWS: Income & Asset certificate issued on or after 1 April 2026
- SC/ST: Caste certificate from the competent authority
- PwD: Disability certificate (40%+ disability) from a government medical board

The Decision Tree: Are You Eligible?
Are you a final-year undergrad OR graduated already?
- Final-year (graduating before June 2027)
- 50%+ in last completed year/semester (45% for SC/ST/PwD)? YES → Eligible. Apply with provisional certificate. NO → Wait. Improve last semester result OR apply for CAT 2027 with full-degree score.
- < 50%? → Not eligible currently.
- Already graduated
- 50%+ aggregate (or 45% for reserved)? YES → Eligible. Apply with degree certificate. NO → Not eligible. Consider completing PG to re-qualify.
- Foreign degree?
- Verify AIU recognition first.
- Pursuing CA / CS / CMA?
- Final-passed = Eligible.
- Inter-passed = NOT eligible.
Common Eligibility Mistakes That Reject Applications
- Calculating percentage incorrectly. If your university uses CGPA, use the official conversion formula — don't multiply by 9.5 unless your institution endorses it.
- Final-year students applying without provisional certificate. Get a "course-completion provisional certificate" from your college before form submission.
- Submitting expired caste certificate. NC-OBC and EWS certificates issued before 1 April of the application year are invalid for that year's CAT.
- Wrong category claim. If your family's income exceeds the EWS/NC-OBC threshold, you cannot claim that category. Misrepresentation = permanent disqualification.
- Distance/correspondence degree without UGC verification. Verify your university and program in the UGC list before applying.
- Choosing wrong "year of degree completion." If you're a 2027 final-year, mark "expected" not "completed." Wrong field = automatic rejection.
Special Cases & Edge Conditions
Diploma Holders
3-year diploma is NOT eligible. You need a full bachelor's degree. Lateral-entry BTech/BE after diploma IS eligible.
Defence Personnel
Eligible. Specific schemes (PIO, Armed Forces Quota) at certain IIMs offer reserved seats — verify with the specific IIM you're targeting.
NRI / Foreign Nationals
Eligible to appear for CAT and apply to IIMs. Some IIMs reserve specific seats for foreign nationals. Tuition is typically higher.
Engineering Final Year (Backlogs)
Eligible if you can produce the provisional course-completion certificate before the IIM admission deadline. Pending backlogs at admission time = automatic disqualification.

Is there an age limit for CAT?
No, there is no upper or lower age limit for CAT. Anyone with a recognized bachelor's degree (or in the final year) can appear. CAT applicants range from 19-year-old final-year UG students to 40+ working professionals.
Can final-year students appear for CAT 2026?
